Summary: Avery Grambs, a teenager who unexpectedly inherited billions from an eccentric billionaire Tobias Hawthorne, is now required to live in the Hawthorne House for the next year alongside the very relatives he just cut out of his will. As her time with the Hawthornes continues, the mystery surrounding her inheritance deepens when new clues suggest Avery's connection to the family, which leaves her wondering if her being there was not a coincidence at all. A hidden message left by the dead billionaire leads Avery and the Hawthorne brothers on a dangerous hunt for their long-lost uncle, Toby, who may not be dead after all. As secrets from the past begin to surface and the truth behind Toby's disappearance comes into question, Avery must also navigate her complicated feelings for Jameson and Grayson Hawthornes. With the stakes rising higher than ever, Avery must decide whether uncovering the truth is worth the cost or if some secrets are better left buried.
Suggested age rating: 16+ based on language, some violence, and indecency.
Review: Picking up where the author last left off makes it easy to fall right back into the world of wealth, riddles, secrets, and Hawthorne family drama. One of the strongest areas in this novel was the character development. I was happy to see Avery growing more confident and assertive as she navigates the world Tobias had dropped her into and the dangerous games surrounding it. The Hawthorne brothers also showed some growth, with Grayson and Jameson opening up and revealing more depth and complexity to who they are as individuals. Though there were many highlights in this sequel, there were also some drawbacks, such as some of my favorite characters who had more significant roles in the first novel were pushed into the background. At the same time, characters who were less relevant to the storyline pulled more focus. Overall, this novel is still one of my all-time favorite reads that kept me engaged the whole time with its fast-paced continuation and twists that I never saw coming. Therefore, this book was an excellent read with lots of mysteries to be uncovered and characters that you immediately fall in love with.
