Summary: Dorthy, a young girl from Kansas, is swept away by a tornado to an unfamiliar and magical land called Oz. Unable to return to her family, Dorthy learns of the powerful Wizard of Oz who has the ability to grant wishes and fulfill dreams and she hopes will help her return home. Along her journey to meet the wizard, she comes across several individuals who also require the wizard's help to fulfill their dreams just like her. The young farm girl meets a Scarecrow who wishes for intelligence, a Tin Man who longs for a heart to have emotions to connect with others, and a Cowardly Lion who, despite his appearance, lacks courage. As the unusual group makes it to the Emerald City where the wizard resides, they are given an impossible task: kill the wicked witch of the West or risk never having their greatest desires granted.
Suggested age rating: 12+ based on frequent and gruesome violence and slaves being present.
Review: When reading this book, you are immediately transported into a realm that evokes the feel of a classic fairytale, complete with a fantastical land brimming with vibrant landscapes and unique creatures. The narrative unfolds in a manner that captivates the reader's imagination, as the author skillfully crafts the land of Oz, distinguishing it from other magical realms typically encountered in children's literature, which is further enhanced by a protagonist who hails from an ordinary world. As the story progresses, the author introduces a plethora of diverse characters, each with their own distinct personalities and quirks. Their individual struggles and aspirations resonate on a personal level, making it easy for readers to root for them as they embark on their quest to seek the elusive Wizard. However, while the book has many enjoyable elements, it is important to address some drawbacks that may detract from its overall appeal, particularly the amount of violence, which could be unsettling for young readers. Given that this is a children's fantasy book, the level of violence depicted may come as a surprise to many readers, especially since it does not appear to serve a necessary purpose within the plot. Additionally, as the characters embark on their quest to find the powerful Wizard, it becomes increasingly apparent that the resolution surrounding his existence is an important aspect of the storyline. Therefore, it is unfortunate to see that discovering the Wizard's true nature and purpose leaves readers with a sense of disappointment, as the anticipated climax does not deliver the significance one might expect from such a central figure in the story. In conclusion, despite the drawbacks, the novel's uniqueness, endearing characters, and enchanting fairytale atmosphere contribute to an overall enjoyable reading experience. The imaginative world of Oz stands out as a distinctive creation and the lovable characters make it easy for readers to become emotionally invested in their adventures. It is easy to understand how the book remains a delightful classic that captures the hearts of its audience, solidifying its place in the pantheon of beloved children's literature.
