Ranger's Apprentice: Halt's Peril

Updated: Feb 26, 2024

Summary: Book 9 in the Ranger's Apprentice series and taking place immediately after the events of Book 8, Halt, Horace, and Will are hot on Tennyson and his group of Outsider's trail after their disappearance from Hibernia. Following them across several countries, the trio faces off against deadly assassins where Halt receives a blow to the arm by a poisoned arrow. As the poison begins to take effect, Will and Horace must find a way to heal him fast or risk returning home with one less ranger.

Suggested age rating: 11+ based on brief language and minor violence.

Review: This book was better than The Kings of Clonmel, but much dryer in material. Most of the author's books have been filled with some sort of quest or leading up to a large battle. This being said, this book has neither of those elements and I often asked myself what was the point of the novel as there is no character growth and no large event that changes what the reader already knows. In summary, if this book did not exist, nothing would be different in how the story and its world currently are. Personally, this novel is closer to the bottom of the series due to its lack of direction and purpose to further the development of the series. Though I did enjoy the ending and still love the characters and the rest of the books, it would not be a novel I would likely read again any time in the near future.
